Following the death of Bonzo Madrid and the subsequent restructuring of Battle School, Colonel Graff determined that no single army should hold too much power. Alai was chosen to lead one of the new factions, Snake Army. Graff intentionally pitted these two elite groups against one another to push Ender to his absolute limits before the final exam. The rivalry was fierce but professional, rooted in mutual respect between Alai and Ender. Both commanders understood that their battles were simulations meant to prepare them for a real war against an alien threat, though only Graff knew the full truth at the time.
